I am writing to ask your support to OPPOSE the Amtrak Hiawatha Service project, which would require the construction of 2 and 3 mile long siding tracks to “hold” idling freight trains in Lake Forest and Glenview. These holding tracks would be built through wetlands and adjacent to homes, schools, churches, parks, businesses, doctor’s offices, and pristine nature preserves. This project would impact people throughout our communities in many ways – polluted air quality; contaminated water supply; reduced property values; longer waits at grade crossing closures; inability for first responders to efficiently reach some destinations; effects on students in nearby schools; and the mile wide evacuation zone in the event of a train derailment, hazardous chemical spill, or explosion. Residents have already had serious impacts from the increase in freight traffic on this Metra rail corridor; please don’t make a bad situation so much worse for your constituents.
